5 New Features of Android 13 aka Tiramisu That Are Not In Android 12

Google has released a beta version of Android 13 or Android Tiramisu in April 2022.  The development of this operating system (OS) has been started since February.

Until the end of July, Google has released Android 13 beta version 3. The successor to Android 12 is well planned and ready to be released globally in the fall of 2022.

5 New Features of Tiramisu

Here are the 5 latest features of Android 13 that are not in Android 12, quoted from the Android developer page, developer.android.com:

1. Apply a different language to each application

In previous versions, the language of each application was set according to the system language.  Some applications may provide a language change feature that allows users to change language preferences.  But in Android 13, Google brought the feature universally, allowing users to apply a different language to each app.  This feature Google calls "Panlingual".

For users currently contributing to beta testing of Android, this feature can be accessed by going to Settings > System > Language & input > Language.  As long as the app includes a string for the selected language, it will display the selected language.  Later the Panlingual feature will appear as a new “Application language” option in “Language & input” settings, but users can also access it from the “App Info” screen.

2. Allows users to manage all notifications in the application at runtime

Most of the apps installed on Android will provide notification or notification access to the device.  If each app can access notification permissions, it's possible to annoy the user with a lot of notifications.  Google has done research, most users are uncomfortable with spam notifications from apps.

On Android 13, Google added a new “Post Notifications” feature for notifications.  With this feature, users can choose whether they want to allow apps to send notifications to their devices at runtime.  This means they are given the latitude to manage notifications in a similar way to how they choose to allow other runtime permissions such as Location and Camera access.

Previously, in Android version 12, Google brought a feature called Notification Importance that allowed users to specify how much notifications could annoy them.  Google also introduced another feature related to notifications, namely Notification Channels.  This feature allows certain types of notifications from an app to be treated differently from other types of the same app.

3. TARE: The Android Resource Economy

What if you managed to save your Android phone's battery, and you got paid for it?  But not with money, you get paid with “credits” which you can use to open or use the app?  Google is developing this feature, called The Android Resource Economy or TARE.

This feature was originally introduced last year, but Android 13 Beta 1 is reportedly changing how TARE works.  According to Mishaal Rahman of Esper, quoted from XDA-Developer, Google has changed the way Android Resource Credits are allocated to various applications.  Initially this feature implemented "maximum circulation", namely credits that limit the number of credits that can be allocated to all applications.

However, the maximum circulation system has been removed and replaced with a “consumption limit” system.  This system limits the credits that can be consumed across all applications in one discharge cycle.  In simple terms, your device will perform less action when the battery level is low.

4. Some changes to the interface

Android 13 still adopts the “Material You” design that was carried by Android 12. This design allows users to change several interfaces according to their preferences.  Some of them can choose a color palette to match the dominant color of the wallpaper.  On Android 13, Google brought some changes to this “Material You”.  One of them users can choose themed application icons.  With this feature, the app icon on Android can be changed in color according to the theme.  On Android 12, icon color changes only apply to system apps.

On Android 13, Google also brought some changes to the look, some of which were a new copy and paste feature.  This feature displays a standard display confirmation when content is added to the clipboard.  When the user copies the text, the system displays a confirmation as a preview which allows the user to edit the copied text first.

5. Low energy Bluetooth audio

Google brings Bluetooth Low Energy or LE Audio audio technology to Android 13. This is the next generation of wireless audio built to replace classic Bluetooth.  This feature is designed to ensure users can receive high-fidelity audio without sacrificing battery life.  Bluetooth LE Audio allows users to share and broadcast their audio to friends and family, or subscribe to public broadcasts for information, entertainment, or accessibility.
